Get a Mexican birth or marriage certificate and an apostille

Use the National Civil Registry Platform to obtain an official digital birth or marriage certificate, checking the services available for the issuing state. For an apostille, contact that state's government; federal documents follow the federal SEGOB route.

Step by step

  1. 1

Check what the receiving authority needs.

Before ordering a certificate for use abroad, ask the receiving authority whether it needs an apostille and a translation. Between countries that belong to the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille replaces consular legalization; ask the receiving authority which one it needs. Confirm the accepted certificate format with the issuing state's apostille office.

  2. 2

Open the official civil registry platform.

Open «Plataforma Nacional del Registro Civil» (National Civil Registry Platform). In «Entidad» (State), choose the state where the birth or marriage was registered. Select «Ver trámites disponibles» (See available procedures).

    What you will see

«Entidad» (State), «Ver trámites disponibles» (See available procedures), «Inicia sesión» (Sign in) and «Regístrate» (Register).

  3. 3

Choose the certificate and prepare your details.

Choose the available birth or marriage certificate service. The birth-certificate page asks for Llave MX and the registered person's CURP or full name, date and place of birth. The marriage-certificate page asks for Llave MX and the CURPs of the registered spouses. Read «Requisitos» (Requirements) before starting.

    What you will see

«Acta de matrimonio en línea» (Online marriage certificate), «Requisitos» (Requirements), «Ver costos» (View fees) and «Iniciar trámite» (Start procedure).

Sign in, check the fee and obtain the digital copy.

Use «Iniciar trámite» (Start procedure) and sign in or create your Llave MX account. Follow the selected service's instructions and check «Ver costos» (View fees) before paying online. The fee differs by state. Save the official digital copy provided by the service.

Request the apostille from the issuing state.

For a state-issued civil registry certificate, contact the apostille authority in that same state and follow its document, payment and appointment instructions. Ask whether your digital copy is acceptable or whether you need a different certified format. Do not send a state birth or marriage certificate to the federal office as though it were a federal document.

Requirements

This guide concerns records registered in Mexico. If you need a foreign birth certificate for Mexican naturalization, use SRE’s naturalization requirements for that foreign document.

Frequently asked questions

Are Mexican birth and marriage certificates apostilled by the federal government?

State-issued civil registry certificates go to the government of the state that issued them. Documents issued by federal authorities go to the competent federal authority in the Secretaría de Gobernación (SEGOB).

Does downloading the certificate also give me an apostille?

No. The registry service provides the official digital certificate. The apostille is a separate authentication by the competent authority.

Can I use any state government's apostille office?

Use the authority for the state that issued the document. SRE says state documents are apostilled by the Secretaría de Gobierno (State Government Office) of the state where the document was issued.

What if my state does not show the certificate service?

Contact the civil registry of the state where the record was registered. The national platform asks you to select a state to see the available procedures; do not assume every record can be downloaded.
