Working remotely from Mexico — visitor and residency options

Mexico has no specific digital nomad visa category. Check the official visitor rules and temporary residency by financial solvency with a Mexican consulate, explaining your planned work and where you will be paid.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Check the official visitor category.

INM calls it «Visitante sin permiso para realizar actividades remuneradas» (Visitor without permission to carry out paid activities). It covers visits of up to 180 days for tourism, business or activities without remuneration in Mexico. Do not treat this category as blanket permission for any remote job.

    What you will see

The heading «Países y regiones que requieren visa para viajar a México» (Countries and regions requiring a visa), the immigration categories and entry documents.

Read INM visitor rules (Spanish) ↗
  2. 2

Review temporary residency for a longer stay.

SRE describes temporary residency for stays longer than 180 days and no longer than four years. «Solvencia económica» (Financial solvency) is one qualifying route. The linked Petén consulate page explains the category; check the requirements of the consulate where you will apply.

    What you will see

The heading «Visa de Residencia Temporal» (Temporary Resident Visa), plus «Requisitos» (Requirements) and «Solicitud de Cita» (Appointment request).

Read SRE residency rules (Spanish) ↗
  3. 3

Confirm your work situation and prepare your application.

Explain your actual work arrangement to the consulate before applying. For the solvency route, prepare your valid passport or travel document and proof of financial solvency. If you are not a national of the country where you apply, SRE also asks for proof of lawful stay there. Follow your consulate's appointment instructions.

  4. 4

Apply for your residence card after entry.

If you enter Mexico with a temporary resident visa, apply to INM for the residence card within 30 calendar days of entry. The visa alone does not guarantee admission to Mexico.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Mexican digital nomad visa?

No specific digital nomad category appears in the INM immigration categories cited here. Use the official category names when speaking to a consulate, including temporary residency by financial solvency.

Does financial solvency automatically let me take a paid job in Mexico?

Do not assume that. The Petén consulate page says the temporary resident visa lets you work in Mexico as long as your salary is paid abroad. If you have a job offer in Mexico with salary paid in Mexico, the employer must first obtain INM authorization for the visa. Explain your situation to the consulate before selecting a route.

Does this guide tell me where to pay income tax?

No. This guide covers immigration information only and does not determine your tax residence or tax obligations.
